This lesson plan requires access to a tabloid-sized (11x17) color printer. Alternatively, you can use large sheets of paper and print out the letter-size color documents.
Time: 2+ periods
Assign each student a country. Either they can pick the country of their ancestors or download the list of countries and cut up and place in a paper bag.
Have each student download the tabloid-sized flag. Using it as a backdrop, download the full color letter size map, the letter size perspective map, and images from Google that describe the student’s choice of country. Encourage the students to save their work in the same folder to easily locate it the next class time.
Questions to answer:
Where is your country?
How many people live in your country?
What does your country produce for export?
What does your country import?
What issues (social, political, environmental, economic) is your country facing?
What ethnic groups live in your country?
When did your country join the United Nations?
When did your country receive its independence? From what other country?
Print out the maps and photos and glue them onto the tabloid color flag. Have the students add the answers to the questions onto their collage.
Post the collages in the classroom. Have each student present to the class about their collage.
