Flag Parade

In this lesson plan, students form groups based on their ethnicity. They use UNFORKIDS.COM to find out more about their home country, and then present to the class and have a school parade.

Start by asking each student to find out where their ancestors came from. This may require parental involvement. Form groups of students either based on the same continent or countries.

Using UNFORKIDS.COM, ask students to research their home country. Some questions they could explore:

            Where is your country located?
            What is the capital?
            How many people live there?
What is the primary export or occupation?

Have each student or group present a short presentation about their country to the rest of the class. This may or may not include the PowerPoint presentations available on UNFORKIDS.COM depending on your technological capabilities.

As part of their presentation, have students download either the full color or outline version of the cutout flags available on UNFORKIDS.COM. They can either color their own or use the full color version if you have a color printer available.

Once their presentations are complete, have a parade! Invite the parents or tour the school with the students waving their flags. You can make banners either based on continent or by country and have the students march in their workgroups.
